Wrecked Iron Seas eBook Meljean Brook

I acquired this one about four years back as a freebie even though I hadn't read the earlier books and novellas in the series thinking I would get to them eventually. Took me a while to get around to it and yet here I am reading Wrecked in series order.

Technically, Wrecked is a standalone in the Iron Seas steampunk series, but it spends a minute amount of time on the Iron Seas world before it launches into the short and swift story. So... not a good place to jump in really, but I suppose it would make for a rousing good steampunk adventure introduction to the author's writing which it was meant to do as originally being part of an anthology.

Wrecked takes up the story of Elizabeth who has spent the last five years fleeing her father's hunters who will take her back home. One hunter, Caius, was more doggedly persistent and now he's found her again. Only, this time, he claims the hunt is to protect her rather than take her back.

There is further unexpected danger and the filling in of an unexpected backstory. There wasn't a ton of development as this one is around a hundred pages , but there was enough for a romance, gritty adventure, and some spicy good times in the bedroom.

This was a good interlude in the larger series, but now its onward toward the finally two entries and I suspect I'll drag it out since I really love the series.

Wrecked Iron Seas eBook Meljean Brook Reviews

The world that Meljean Brook creates is amazing in its imagination and details. The heroine and hero have known each other as teenagers. The story starts 5 years after Elizabeth runs from her father and Caius, who has been hunting her for those 5 years, finds her.
A short story in her Iron seas series we follow the story of an american woman on the run. Only to have her father and someone else never give up the chase. Elizabeth is a lovely character but my true hero in this story is Caius. I would have loved to see a little more of their history but a rather enjoyable read. Well worth the time to read especially since it is only a short story.

We do have some cameo's from other characters in the series but this is a true stand alone.
I read this as part of the Fire & Frost anthology. Set in the Iron Seas world, Elizabeth, who has been on the run from her father (for a very good reason), and hunter Caius, who was supposed to bring her back but failed before, are sweet together and there is a good enough set up for the past history between them to make that part of the story work. The resolution to the main conflict of the story is a bit quick, but that's not really a problem, just a nit and just my greedy nature speaking - I always want more of this world.
I've thoroughly enjoyed every story I've read set in the Iron Seas world, and this one was no exception. Elizabeth is on the run from her father, and Caius is a hunter sent by her father to retrieve her. He caught up to her once before, which didn't go so well for him, but this time things are different and he just wants to help her. Elizabeth and Caius are in for an adventure complete with hunters and their dogs, airships and zombies, and I enjoyed it immensely. There are a few fun twists to the story which make things interesting, ending with a very satisfying conclusion. I look forward to reading more stories in this series, they never disappoint.
"So the chase was on. And this time Caius meant to end it."

THE STORY Elizabeth Jannsen has been running from her father's hunters for years. Two years ago, Caius Trachter, an indentured servant, found her and was escorting her back to her father when she escaped and was believed dead. Now he has found her again, but he says that he wants to protect her and help her escape.

OPINION I found this story not as compelling or emotionally complex as the others in the Iron Seas world. Many of the same elements were involved but they didn't connect as well for me as others in the series. I did like the story of Elizabeth and Caius and I really liked their characters, but perhaps the length of the story was too short for such a story to be told in a complex manner. Their problems were resolved too quickly and the action part of the story actually detracted from the romance. However, that is a small complaint for a story that overall I found interesting and enjoyed reading.

WORTH MENTIONING Brook does an interesting job of putting into consideration technology and the morality and ethics involving them. Even though these books have a historical context, they clearly also are a commentary on current and future technologies.

FINAL DECISION I liked this story even though I did not find it as compelling or complex as many of the other stories. It does give an interesting view of a different group of people in the Iron Seas world.

CONNECTED BOOKS WRECKED is one of the Iron Seas novellas. It can be read independent of any other the other books. Although it takes place in the same world, it is not dependant on any other book.

STAR RATING I give this novella 4 stars.
This was a fun Iron Seas novella. I enjoyed visiting this wonderful world again. This could be read as a stand alone to introduce readers to the Iron Seas world.

I enjoyed Elizabeth and Caius as characters, they had good chemistry and were fun to read about.

This book dealt more with the zombie aspects of the Iron Sea world, although there was also a lot of airship travel as well. The second half has some action and all of it is well written with lots of witty banter.

Although this book doesn’t deal with the core set of Iron Seas characters (at least I don’t think it does, I don’t remember Elizabeth from the main series). It does mention characters from the main series, for example the airship that Lady Corsair runs.

Things are tied up pretty quickly and I felt like the ending was a bit rushed. However, I do understand that this is a novella and so it has to be short.

Overall this was a fun little addition to the Iron Seas series. I enjoyed the characters and absolutely adore this world. I would recommend to those who want to take a quick look at the Iron Seas world or to long time fans of the series. This is a wonderful steampunk romance that has very solid world-building.
