Catering to Nobody Goldy Book 1 Diane Mott Davidson Books
This book developed VERY slowly. It was really boring throughout different parts, and then it ended okay. It tried to be a "serious" cozy, and failed. The characters were not likable. Goldy is annoying. Her son is even more annoying. I got tired of hearing how terrible John Richard was, and yes, he's a vile creature, but stop telling me. I feel like this may be the themes of all the books, and if so I won't make it through the whole series. I am currently reading book two. Maybe it's better. This wasn't awful, it just was a poor start to a series. But, series often start slowly. So, I'll forge on. The recipes sound great though.

Catering to Nobody Goldy Book 1 Diane Mott Davidson Books Reviews
I enjoyed this first in the series and will continue. The main character is divorced from a philandering husband who is a doctor. She is supporting herself and son by catering. After an attempt on her father in laws life with poison at one of her catered events, she is under suspicion and has to shut down her business until cleared. Not content with waiting, she gets work cleaning and works to find the real culprit as well. In the meantime she and the local sheriff become an item. Good story.
Took off 1 star due to the MANY typos and punctuation errors.
The main problem is the placement of the recipes. Several are in the middle of a sentence, all are in a part of the book that interrupts the flow of the story, instead of at the end of the chapters. Took off 1 star.
Another outstanding murder mystery by the talented Diane Mott Davidson. She not only conjures up a plate of delicious murder, she also cooks up wonderful recipes for the reader's pleasure. All of the recipes featured in the life of her amateur sleuth, Goldy Schulz (Professional Caterer), are included in the book so the reader can have more of a "being there" experience, if desired. This novel stands on its own, but if read in sequence with the rest of the Goldy collection, the broader, more complete story of Goldy's life unfolds. So much fun!
Had a hard time with this first book of the series. Found the characters unreal at best and flat-out annoying at worst, especially Goldy. Whiny, self absorbed and of questionable culinary skills (who puts mayo in guacamole?!?). Her friends were annoying and don't get me started on her kid and his relationship with her. The only character who seemed normal or likeable was the detective, and even he was annoying in that he suffered Goldy's rejection and verbal abuse. Run the other way, dude. You'll have dodged a bullet! Forced myself to finish this one but won't be going back for seconds.
Facing serious surgery and an extended period of recuperation, my mystery-buff sister recommended checking out Diane Mott Davidson's culinary mystery series about a ditzy Colorado Caterer named Goldy Schultz. My sister's an avid reader with somewhat questionable tastes in books and movies so--- I was somewhat skeptical at first! There was no need to be concerned, though, as the book turned out to be very interesting - kept my attention all the way through. The characters are unique and full of folksy charm. The storyline proved to be a bit challenging to solve which is good for a mystery. FOOD recipes also sound good. I look forward to trying some of them. All in all, a very good experience. Would have rated it four and a half stars but not quite five. Do Recommend it! I plan to read more of the series. Enjoy!
I will not be reading any more books in this series. I got sick of reading about her son, ho hum, her ex ho hum, the sad neurotic other characters. It was a downer. Yes it was ok to talk about the abuse she suffered from her EX but too much of it. Others may enjoy it, I like lighter reading. A cozy murder it was not. I also did not care for the snarky remarks about sticking it up the bum of our military generals in Washington. Just remember people, the US military is ruled by civilians, our top generals always answer to civilians. This means that if you don't like our foreign policies take it up with CIVILIANS. Her victim wanted no flowers but rather donations to 'Pacifists United'..........all I can say is oyvay.
This is the first book in the series. Goldy has a catering business which is her primary means of supporting herself and her son, Arch, as her ex-husband, John, a doctor, is notorious for being late with his payments. She left him because of his abuse, and is good friends with his other ex-wife, Marla. They refer to John as “The Jerk”. She has a job catering a wake which is particularly sad as is it for her son’s teacher, Laura Smiley, a woman who made an extra effort to connect with Arch, and because she died of an apparent suicide. She is surprised to see her John, his new girlfriend, and John’s father and mother at the wake. When the father, Fritz, falls to the floor, John accuses Goldy of poisoning him in an attempt to get John. When it turns out to be rat poison in the coffee cup, the police send Detective Tom to investigate. While he is sympathetic to Goldy, he has to close the business until he can clear her from the investigation. With her business shut down, Goldy is decides to help with the investigation to move things along. She begins to untangle some nasty secrets from the past, leading her into danger. The characters are intriguing and very well done. This looks to be a “cozy” series that is more like the China Bayles type, with more depth and good character development. I look forward to reading more about Goldy and Arch in the next book.
