Wonderful story combining Christmas trees, presents and cookies, with the true meaning of Christmas with the birth of Christ. So far, my favorite Christmas book for my son. Adorable details, beautiful illustrations, and profound new way of presenting the idea of making room for baby Jesus.
Mortimer the mouse is looking for a new home when he finds a great little house-but its filled with statues! He shoves all the statues out, and sleeps in the nice cozy bed of straw. Every day, the statues are put back, and every night Mortimer has to push them out again, until one day, he overhears the story of Christmas and lovingly gives his bed back to the baby Jesus. In the end of the book, you see him with an even better house for a mouse (a gingerbread house!)

Mortimer is a mouse, living in a dark hole under the stairs. In his opinion, his hole is "too cold, too cramped, too creepy." One night, as he's sneaking around the big house looking for crumbs that the human family may have left behind, Mortimer finds what he thinks will be a perfect new home for him -- the stable in a Nativity scene. The excited mouse struggles to drag all the Nativity figures out of this stable, and he nestles himself down in the manger. The next day, as he's out prowling for crumbs, he comes back to find that someone has put the figures back into the stable! Annoyed, he drags them out again, and so it goes for several days, until one evening, Mortimer overhears the human father reading the Christmas story to his children, about how there was no room for them in the inn. The little Mouse realizes that the statue he has been dragging out of the manger each day is a statue of baby Jesus. Touched by the story, Mortimer decides that he wants to make room for the baby Jesus, and carefully puts all the figures back in their places. And in the end, Mortimer own prayer is granted. He finds a home that is just right for him!
A really sweet book about the Christmas story. It also teaches the importance of people have a place to live and as someone who works with the homeless population, I love that I can teach that to my nephew.
No doubt it's a challenge to present the manger scene in a fresh perspective. Yet, Karma Wilson is up for the challenge! This story is told through the experiences of Mortimer, an adorable little mouse who seeks a warm home in a table-top manger scene. Not knowing the purpose of these ornaments, Mortimer decides to simply push the baby Jesus and the other manger statues out in order to make room for himself, presenting a parallel dilemma to the original Christmas story where will Jesus stay? Each day is the same. Mortimer returns to find baby Jesus back in place, and Mortimer pushes and shoves Jesus back out. It is only while overhearing the Christmas story that Mortimer realizes whom these statues represent. He remorsefully offers Christ his bed back. In the end, there is room for Jesus - and there should be room in your home for this book! It is a great message with delightful illustrations and a happy ending for Mortimer . . . who later finds the best home a mouse could ever ask for! You'll have to read it to see!
read to the grands, ages 5 and 3. they were enchanted. Mortimer is so cute thinking he has found a great home in the Manger. The illustrations are amazing. I nearly got teary when Mortimer heard the Christmas Story and realized he was sleeping in Baby Jesus' bed. Just love this book.
A cute new addition to our Advent reading countdown. I found this one last year after the Christmas season and decided to add it to our collection. It is a fun read about Mortimer the mouse and how he is looking to find a new home that is warm and cozy instead of his cold one. I love how he finds a new place and rearranges things to suit his needs, but then how he hears a story and realizes what house he took over. He puts everything back with understanding now for the new king who sleeps in the manager. The illustrations are bright and cheery too. This book will be part of our countdown each year.
My niece and nephew (ages 3 and 5) LOVED this book! We read it multiple times this Christmas season and I even found them several times "reading" it to themselves or each other. This book has some depth to it, without being heavy. It brings in a spiritual aspect without being another nativity story. (Absolutely nothing at all wrong with nativity stories, but there are only a few angles from which the story can be told.) This book hung out on my "Christmas Books Wish List" for ages. I'm so glad I finally purchased it!
Oh my gosh, this book is so cute! It's all about a little mouse who is tired of being in a cramped, cold, and creepy hole for his home. He finds the manger scene set up in the family's living room, and promptly proceeds in throwing out the characters from the nativity, to make the manger his new bed. However, each time when he comes back, the characters are all set up again. He finally spies one of the humans setting them back up, and hears them reading the Christmas story, and realizes that he cannot use the little bed because it belongs to baby Jesus. So he utters a little prayer to Jesus, as he's climbing back down from the manger scene, and asks Him to provide a different house for him. Just then, he spies......a gingerbread house, and moves right in! This book is really sweet, and the illustrations are adorable! Your kids will love this one, and it helps to bring the focus back to Jesus, who is the real reason for this season...
