She sprinkles poems and recipes into tales of barbers, a music teacher, and a fishmonger. Some of her stories can serve as a tantalizing tour through parts of Africa as well as northern New Mexico. Through it all, we know she has listened to her heart, insisting that our hearts have a special kind of wisdom that is inaccessible to rational thinking.

Her wonderful book is bright in image, in characters including minor ones, and in quest for meaning in life’s multiple, sometimes tangling, but always intensive processes. Tragic events and great losses occur; zest remains. Yes, it’s a “book of life,” encompassing and capturing—only to release to freedom—those essentials that we all know but seldom are able to articulate as fully and generously as she does while gathering stimulus from people—the primary ones and the random, from experience as it unfolds both by design and by itself, and from occasional, somewhat mysterious bursts of beauty. Memoir even seems a misnomer, because she breaks the usual boundaries of the genre. Narrative is interrupted for recipes, chronology gets busted in favor of lingering quasi-photographic shots: tulips and pansies in her backyard, giraffe heads above the trees in Africa, the expression on her father’s face when he learned she had eloped. She draws the reader slyly and somewhat shyly into her world as it grew, in fact as she formed it, for she does not live passively—she chooses the threads that determine the fabric. Lucid and luminous in writing, this is a book that one wants to return to. How compelling to comprehend the other’s life, from roots to full flower! Telling the story of one's life is easy, but writing a memoir that combines raw honesty, humor, and insight, while exposing the entire gamut of emotion that connects with every reader is not. The author is not afraid to have friends and strangers alike peer into much of her private life and really feel who she is. Her story is compelling and leaves the reader wanting more.
I enjoyed reading this book and felt like I connected with what the author was writing about especially since Iam also a teacher. This book helped me to connect to my upbringing because Iam a native of NM with a richness for my culture. You also get a glimpse into who she really is, a teacher by passion, and a human being that has compassion and a love for living. Would definitly recommend this book to anyone wanting to feel connected to the kind of love and spirituality this book makes one feel.
Sharon Rhutasel takes us on a journey that spans the decades of her teaching career. For those of you who used to think that teachers lived at school, this is a touching and moving reminder that they have lives, loves, joys and sorrows just like everyone else. The insight she reveals about her thinking and methods to her teaching are an inspiration to everyone on how to approach life with open arms, eyes and hearts. Thank you Sharon for allowing us into your world. I know you had a big impact on my teaching and my out look on life long before Living By Ear, and will always continue to. Cheers!
An absolutely wonderful, poignant view of an incredible woman's life. Each chapter is a gem filled with heart-warming, touching, and sometimes heart-breaking reflections of a "teacher" in every sense of the word. I highly recommend this beautiful account of an inspirational life-journey written by a true master of language and writing.
Sharon has the amazing gift of writing so that you are able to see, touch, feel and taste what she is writing about. My mouth was watering to try all her recipes and my heart was touched by her big love for her students, her husbands, family members and friends. Her writing flows so well that I found it very difficult to put the book down and when I had to, I couldn't wait to get back. This is a great book for anyone whose lost a great love, or teachers who have given all they had to give to their students. If you like to cook - you'll find great recipes and if you love poetry - well - some of the best I've read in a long time. My heart is warmed and stomach full after reading Listening by Ear. Thanks for sharing your life so openly, honestly, and heartfully with the world - I am exuding great gratitude for the gift of this book.
Occasionally I find a book so meaningful that I miss it once I have finished reading it. This was my experience with Sharon Rhutasel-Jones' memoir.
This is not just a book about the author's remarkable teaching technique. She writes about her life with heartfelt courage, expressing her deepest emotions with such honesty and skill that she draws the reader into her life as if we are experiencing it. I felt the influence of her father. I experienced a sense of adventure ( and worry ) about her teenage elopement. This emotional involvement continued as I read about her childhood, first marriage, holiday celebrations, family, dating experience, students, joys, sorrows and Larry.
Reading about Sharon Rhutasel-Jones' life has been thoroughly enjoyable and an inspirational experience which will stay with me forever.

Mrs. Rhutasel has written a fantastic memoir. This book brought back the smells, sights and sounds of my home town. I was transported back in time to September of 1980, when I took a seat in her class for the first time and she opened a new world of literature for me. Reading this book, I was once again learning, this time about the life and experiences of the best teacher I have ever known. Mrs. Rhutasel has not retired from teaching. This book has many life lessons - and some wonderful recipes. (I recommend you eat before reading this book.) I feel fortunate to have an opportunity to be one of Sharon Rhutasel's students again. This is a must read for former students, colleagues and anyone looking for a vibrant, dynamic read.
